Jenna tried to answer all Mr. Harpers questions. She sat across from him in the hotel lobby. Two sofas and a chair were snuggled into a private corner right under the wide stairwell.
Matt was at the café, finishing up from breakfast. He had wanted to come with her but she decided if she were an independent woman then she didnât need him at her side every single inch of the way. Even though she wished he was here now.
Mr. Harper was a nice man, but a bit scary. His questions came one after another, he seemed harsh even though he didnât seem judgemental. He wore a pair of eye glasses as he made notes.
Lily, one of the owners of the hotel stopped by. âIs there anything I can get you?â she asked.
âIâm fine,â Mattâs father mumbled. He looked up at Jenna. âYou?â
âIâm fine. Thank you, Lily.â
Lily gave her a wink. Even though everyone in town knew Mattâs father came here to help her, Lily was showing her support. No one wanted to see the owner of the café upset.
Jenna clenched and unclenched her hands.
âTry to relax. Iâm asking you these questions in this way because if Harrison decides to have an attorney present, or the Judge wants to question you, youâll have an idea what to expect. Iâm not trying to scare you but educate you.â
âI appreciate your help.â
The rest of the hour flew by quickly. When he stood up announcing the session was over, they shook hands and Jenna hurried back to the café. There was so much to do, she didnât want to get behind. Even though the trial was in a few days, she still had a café to run.
When she got there, Sheriff Montana was standing by the counter, having a cup of coffee. She searched for Matt, who was in the kitchen fixing plates of food for the few customers left.
âGood morning, Sheriff. You are early again. Does this mean you have more bad news for me?â Even though she knew exactly why he was here.
âI spoke to Matt and he showed me the kitchen and even gave me a piece of leftover chicken so the claims this Harrison has are unfounded. I feel fine.â
Jenna tried to appear innocent. âOh, dear! What is he saying now?â
Sheriff Montana grinned right before he took a sip of coffee, hiding his smile behind the cup. âIt seems he ate supper here last night and before he left he had a bought of the runs. He came thundering in the Sheriffâs office early this morning claiming someone put something in his food.â
âNow heâs accusing my cook of tampering with his supper? Thatâs a terrible accusation.â She laid her hand over her chest, trying to display the look of horror on her face.
Matt walked by her with two steaming plates of eggs and potatoes. He leaned in and whispered. âToo dramatic.â
She grinned. The Sheriff grinned. Matt walked away grinning.
âI supposed we can have all the customers who ate here yesterday sign a petition stating whether they got sick or not.
